RP20 Waiting for Data

Every time I plug in my pedal the display reads "Waiting for data". Does the RP20 have a battery?

yes and it's probally dead, but that sounds like a programe error. I don't know if replaseing a battery will fix that. Mine does it every once in a while, but I just unplug it for a few and plug it back in and it seems to work. If you know someone with an rp20 you can dump from one pedal to anoughter or you can hook it up to you comp and reprogam the whole thing. Call the music stores to find an authorised digitech repair center. most will do the hex transfer for nothing.

I plan on backing mine up to a disk as soon as i figure out how

My RP20 had this problem for almost a year and I solved it today. I tried to update the firmware to v1.15 to work with RPedit. Something went wrong and got the dreaded "waiting for data". No reset procedure helped. Today, I reviewed the instructions from http://www.langamers.it/mandricus/musica/rp20_english.html

I started with the instructions from v1.05 and the updater gave me a sysex id error. I then went to the instruction for v1.10 and got the same error. I uninstalled the updater. Then I installed the updater for v1.15 and it installed. This time the os updated without error. It now works again. Hope this helps.

Before reading on: go to this link below, read all carefully and do exactly what’s described in it.

http://www.langamers.it/mandricus/musica/rp20_english.html

many thanks t the web-master, very nice job. Anything yet? Ok…
Some times ago I tried to upgrade my RP20 but something get wrong and my unit started to display “found this unit” and “waiting for data”.
Nothing out even searching the web…
I formatted my laptop accidentally and tried to install only the Updater first, then performing suddenly the firmware upgrade: it went! Without pressing any button! It proceeded automatically from 0% to 100%!
Summing up:
1. Backup your RP20
2. Go to the link above and follow all the procedures; if it doesn’t go
3. Press the “utility” button instead of “assign” while turning on; if it doesn’t go
4. Try to use a joystick 2 midi cable/adapter; if it doesn’t go
5. Format your computer and after reinstalling the OS (Windows XP) install first the Updater and suddenly try to perform the upgrade; if it doesn’t go
6. retry installing the Digitech Updater on an older Windows 98/ME/2000 (better W98).
... to be continued...

Re: RP20 Waiting for Data

but what’s above isn’t enough…
as I succeeded in loading the firmware for the first time, my pedalboard didn’t get no input! It was so strange because the jack and the pots were ok.
So I desperately decided to go to my trusty electronic shop where they told me that if I could get any schematics they’d have tried to repair my pedalboard. I wrote to Digitech and they kindly e-mailed me all the RP20 Valve schematics. Get back to the electronic shop and after two weeks of hard work they gave me back my RP20 on duty! An built for me a specific power supply compatible with “semi-tube” devices. So I found that all the problems with my pedalboard came from the power supply: during the update a tension shock feeded back into my RP20 and blew some integrated circuits and capacitors! I mailed the schematics to Mandricus @ langamers, so many thanx to him for the great support.

Hello!

I would like to know if is possible to do the RP-20 system upgrade using the updater software in Windows 7?

I am trying it, but I can not. The unit stay stoped in "Found this unit" status and the software says "problem if your midi conection". But if I try to upload/download any sample patche using the updater software it works very fine.

Can someone help me with this problem?

Thanks a lot!

if Windows 7 is back compatible (and i think i heard it is) you should be able to. but first be sure to download/install the proper drive for your midi device. anyway try asking Mandricus at the link above, he knows better. if you don't get any result you can try formatting your computer, reinstall Windows 7 and then, first and only, the updater; once you update the RP20 you can install all the other application you need in your computer.

Could you send me by e-mail the schematics that you received from digitech company? My e-mail is julio_biomedicina@yahoo.com.br

Please, if someone knows how to solve this problem, I would appreciate your help.

Hey Frac82!

Thanks by the schemes! I am not the same Julio Cesar from Internazionale! But, I am from Brazil too!
So, I didn't understand what you said about the SYSEX. Did you find something on the Digitec website? Now my Digitech is on service repair. They are trying to identifi where is the problem and if is possible to fix. I hope that it is easy to fix, and not too much expensive :) .
But thanks! If someone else knows something about this problem, will be very usefull to me!

Regards!

i just wanted to tell you that i even found on Digitech official website a file describing SysEx correspondances for Digitech devices (RP20 too). i really hope the schematics help your service in finding a solution.
let's keep this page alive! it's one of the few resources on the RP20 Valve left!

Hello frac82!

You are right! We should keep this page alive! Probably will help a lot of others RP20 users too!
Well, if you could send me by e-mail the SYSEX file, I would appreciate it! With this file I can try to re-transfer the original SYSEX again (I hope that I have success!).

If I get some success with it, I post here!

See you!

I attempted to update and now have the same black boxes on the screen. Any new information available for this? I would like to do a system dump from one rp20 to another to get it back in working order. Does anyone have a good description of how to go about that? I'm also looking for someone with a unit already updated that maybe I could get the unit to unit to work b/c the software route just isn't working. Also wondering if someone could post the schematics and sysex up to the yahoo group for the Rp20. Thanks ahead of time!!

hi gummed, welcome.
for everyone: please read before asking.
1st - i (and not only me) posted two long topics above, try to apply them step by step then come back writing your questions.
2nd - i think (and i'm pretty sure) that once someone solves any of his problems with the RP20 Valve it would be nice to post his method for getting the device back on duty!

I could not get my RP20 working.
But a guy from Digitech Company in USA sent me an e-mail telling that I should try to solve it by trying to remake the update procedure again. But he told me to start the connection with the RP20 turned off and when the software shows “Trying to connect” immediately turn on the power to the RP20. He also told me that I may need to do it several times to get it to synchronize.

I did not try it yet, but if you get success trying it, please let me know.

When I try, and get it, I post here.
Chers,
JC.

welcome back JC 2 u 2!
i really believe that we all had a power supply problem... my technician had to rebuild a special power supplier/adapter to feed my RP20 unit and i read somewhere it's the same even for younger Zoom G9.2TT. i deduce it is a common problem for combo tube/solid-state devices...
i can try to contact my technician and get the schematics of my power supplier, but don't take it for granted!

Hi,

For those out there where the firmware resulted in black boxes on the display, did the "plug in" method work for you? I am plugging in like crazy, but the RP20 stays inoperable :/

Any input is very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Marcus

Re: RP20 Waiting for Data

Hello all!

After trying several times (more than 100 times), here I am to say that it DID NOT work.

My RP20 is not working yet.

I got in contact with a technic assistance, and they told me that I will need a new EEPROM from digitech.

The problem is: where could I get this eeprom? Here in Brazil nobody has it to sell. I think that I will need to look for it in USA. But the problem is that the total cost (eeprom + mail to Brazil) may become bigger than the pedalboard price.

I will start this search by contacting DIGITECH.com .

If anybody knows where to buy this eeprom in USA (or in another country) please tell me.

Or if somebody has it to sell, please, contact me: julio_biomedicina@yahoo.com.br

Thank you guys.

JC.

Hi,

Latest update from my side; I got the EEProm replaced by Digitech. They also replaced the adapter (€ 80,- in total). The pedalboard works as before (on versiojn 1.05). Do I dare to try an upgrade? :-)

Could you send me the contact of Digitech store where you have gotten your EEPROM. I would like to order the new eeprom to replace mine. After one year trying to solve my problem, maybe you will give me the hope again with this contact!!!!!

My e-mail is julio_biomedicina@yahoo.com.br

I will wait your contact.

All the best.

did you read my posts a little above...?!? what's your OS? try to perform the ugrade from a desktop if you were on a laptop or viceversa; if it doesn't work try another computer from a friend of yours!

M audio uno its useless to upgrade it.
I used and old MPU 401 midi/pci slot (from a old computer I have) and worked perfectly!.

I tried with roland/M audio and other devices (newest ones) and any of them worked, then I had to do it with my old computer (a joystick midi cable connected)

Hello all! There is a huge lacking of time since the last time I was here.
Well, the great new about my dead RP-20 is that... there is no new!
My Digitech RP-20 is still dead and even the Digitech's technician could not help me (at least didn't answer my e-mails).
My unit is still under maintenance and I don't have any idea when I will have it back again. Dead since 06/2011.
If someone got this same problem that I had and get it solved, please, share here your experience.
Best,
Julio Cezar!

Re: RP20 Waiting for Data

Julio Cezar, I had the same problem and now have restored my unit.

The way to go is to get an old Windows 98 PC with an ISA Soundblaster sound card, PROPERLY CONFIGURED, this means: no IRQ or another hardware conflicts inside Windows - just go ahead and disable any other sound card installed on your system, as well as modem or even Printer (LPT1) ports to free IRQ (I had to do that) from the device manager. You can re-enable them afterwards. It helps to have the right drivers (or at least similar ones made by the card´s manufacturer), my card is a SB32PNP, althought it shows SB16 on device manager, anyway it worked the same.

Get a WORKING and COMPATIBLE Gameport to MIDI adapter (there are several designs and some of them don´t work OK for the update process)

I´ve tried several pc, notebooks, etc (from i7 to Celeron) and MIDI interfaces (from cheap USB cables to expensive Native Instrument interfaces) and this spartan setup was the only one that worked. It took two tries and it went through, directly from 1.02 to 1.50.4

I even built myself the gameport to MIDI cable. Don´t waste your time with MIDI to USB cables, onboard soundcards or PCI ones (maybe some Creative Labs could work). The MPU-401 part is just emulated and doesn´t cut it for this task. So get an obsolete, old and big ISA Soundblaster card and an equally obsolete, old and big windows 98 PC, set it right, and you are good to go!!! I hope you can bring back to life you RP-20.

Cheers from Argentina!!!!
